¡Viva la Simulación!

MELA 4, DAY THREE: 9 MARCH 2013

Michael Kouly (President, Cambridge Leadership Institute for Global Leadership) has much to  communicate about our relationship to authority and leadership systems, both in the Middle East and beyond. Youmna gives our speaker an encouraging smile.

Mater and Shadi follow the discussion.

Riyadh strives to get to the source of the problem (as one might well expect from a well and reservoir engineer).

Sanad meditates on Abbas' intervention.

Something is in the air...

¡Viva la Revolución! ¡Viva Che Qatari!

Under pressure as the session's elected representative, Lady Eman is offered her peers' support and reassurance. (Arise, Sir Riyadh!)

Noble knights of Oman, Salah and Amer, joust using hand gestures.

The two M's: Maha and Michael.
These are seriously tall people.

Michael supplements his morning session with a disquisition on life and leadership, and the three P's without which the exercise of leadership is either vain or dysfunctional: mastery of purpose, process and participation.

The two S's – Said and Shadi.

After lunch we combine our S's and P's for Star Power:

Star Power is a sensational systems simulation....stratifying potentially partisan participants into social/ political subgroups... to produce pleasingly practical scenarios!

Life in the slums. Nada looks jolly. But it is not all fun and games at the bottom of the hierarchy as a member of the triangle group.

The craving for upward mobility. The circles go into a huddle, plotting how to become squares.

The view from the penthouse. Behold the world of the squares. Gaze upon them, and envy.

Trading chips to make combinations that raise your score is an essential part of the game.

It's a deal! Ahmed and Maha have already got into the swing of things.

To trade or not to trade? Sultan looks for the catch.

Yup, Ahmad is feeling good about that one.

Abdulrahman under scrutiny. Isn't that a face you would trust anywhere? Zainab is not too sure.

At the end of the day it is only a game, however, and the bonds we have established of trust and friendship reign supreme.

The end of the day.
