Discover Yourselves!

MELA 2 DAY THREE, 8 OCTOBER 2011

It is morning in Sharm El Sheikh, and the Egyptian sun is making sure that participants have plenty of vitamin D for the intensive day ahead.

Michael Kouly asks: How do we really make decisions? How independent are our choices, given the influence of dominant voices in our heads, present hungers and past memories, the sediments of a lifetime's experiences?

For example, did Irina, Faye and Tory independently choose to wear complementary pastel blouses this morning -- or was it hardwired into their DNA?

Leadership, and ultimately life, is about purpose. And getting in touch with one's purpose necessitates an understanding of one's own uniqueness. Here, Michael scientifically demonstrates that Rita is unique in the universe.

The MELA office crew fulfill their purpose by answering emails, shuffling papers and solving logistical problems.

DISCover Yourself! The DISC is a powerful tool for managers and team leaders to look at the personality and behavioral styles of individuals, and thereby to better understand interactions within groups and organizations.

Abeer Qumsieh, Founder & Director, Better Business, marshals the audience into columns representing their D, I, S and C personality types.

And now to the hotel's Grand Ballroom for the DISCover Yourself "Station Exercise." Like the twelve labors of Hercules, twelve challenging tasks await the MELA members, designed to test a spectrum of skills in a highly-charged, team-based environment.

They are competing for a selection of fabulous prizes!

Some tasks require attentive watching.

Sometimes, very attentive watching.

Some tasks require close listening.

Sometimes, very close listening.

John Mills mans the photography station. Pitilessly, he forces teams to scurry across the whole resort complex, even in darkness, to take photographs that match his samples. John enjoys his work for MELA.

Rany and Monther plunge their hands into the unknown -- and do not like what they find. Is that Dania laughing?

Cinderella hopes for the best.

Gloria Dittus oversees the "pot-luck" station, and makes no secret of what she thinks about it.

Abeer and her colleague observe the activities they have set in motion. Now the five teams must exhibit their acting abilities with short sketches illustrating the DISC personality types.

Company chief Nazem orders Amer to produce his department's report within ten minutes.

Big Boss Nader treats his team less tyrannically, but still has trouble reconciling his employees' various characters.

Randi dances her group through an impressionistic piece centered around a statue. Or is it a ghost? Or is it Basma wearing a sheet over her head?

Move over, Robert de Niro: Mustafa is a natural for the gangster role, to judge by this violent tale of love, jealousy, and revenge.

Welcome to the Rany Baghdadi Show, where the domineering host occasionally lets his interviewees share part of his limelight. Tonight's guests: Hillary Clinton and Mahatma Gandhi!

The panel of judges awards marks for creativity, presentation, and time management. The sum total of scores from all the afternoon tasks are tabulated... and the gold medals go to...

Peter, Amer, Rateb, Nazem -- congratulations to our day's winners!
