Common Ground

MELA 2 DAY EIGHT, 13 OCTOBER 2011

By popular demand, Bill Starnes conducts an additional session on handling crucial confrontations. Share your good intentions with the person you are having a problem with, and seek common ground.

MELA 1 friends have started arriving for the reunion! It does not take long for MELA 1 facilitator Tom McCandlish and Abdullah Alznytan to find common ground in their ways of thinking (and in their dress sense).

Rita tells Salma a scary vampire story.

A party atmosphere reigns in the office, as the MELA bags and hats finally made it through customs clearance. Reflecting various degrees of relief and joy: Mohammad, Faye, Lama, Irina.

Back in plenary session, Monther describes his conversation with Victor Antonio, which resulted in Victor expressing his intention to join the roster of speakers at MELA 3.

Ginny is beaming with the good news she now has to convey to the group.

With the help of Angela and Tory, she announces tomorrow's MELA 1 & 2 Reunion cruise, on a chartered, glass-bottomed yacht -- thanks to Gloria and Andrew's generous sponsorship.

Why are many people apprehensive about change? Because they are burdened with past habits and assumptions. Jim dramatizes the dead weight that participants may be carrying around with them, by making them pick up their chairs.

How do people behave, as individuals and in groups, within hierarchical organizations where power is unevenly distributed? Star Power is a simulation that models such a situation.

Participants interact by exchanging chips according to arbitrary transactions rules. Tough guy Abdullah Riri makes Rateb an offer he cannot refuse.

Basma explains to a dubious Monther the myriad reasons why he should agree to her proposal.

"And just for you, my friend, I give you a cheap price, and if you accept my offer, even though I myself will lose by the deal, I will throw in these two cellphones, absolutely free. What do you say?"

Tariq and Hanna are getting up close and personal.

Life is great at the top of the pyramid!

Life is not so great a few rungs lower in the organization.

Meanwhile the MELA 1 Reunion is getting into full swing. Lyutha Al-Habsy hooks up with Nancy McCandlish.

MELA 1 ladies share dinner and reminiscences: Sandra, Soughit, Hania, Dima, Haya.

Ramzi and Saif.

Outside in the Souq restaurant area, members and facilitators of the two MELA classes join for a photograph. The process of bonding has begun! To be continued...
