The Master Persuaders

MELA 3 DAY SIX, 20 MARCH 2012

The future of computing, and how it will affect our lives, is the topic addressed by Majd Sakr (Assistant Dean for Research, Carnegie Mellon University Qatar Campus). The Internet is a new disruptive technology with profound consequences for leadership, work styles, jobs, and teamwork in upcoming decades. It is a persuasive vision.

Susan Simons can see the future coming. It's awesome.

Joe is more focused on technology's present than its future.

The role of young leaders, says Majd, is to enable innovation. Therefore, concentrate on innovation: provide time for it, budget funds for it, and do not fear to experiment and fail.

MELA Board Chairman Nabil Alyousef chats with Abdullah.

The ability to influence others is a fundamental leadership skill. Sales consultant and professional speaker, Victor Antonio, dissects the techniques of master persuaders.

Victor kicks off with his signature finger exercise.

It twists Dina's digits. It tangles Youssef's ticklers.

... It re-adjusts Adel's appendages...

Hundreds of books purport to teach how to sell. Victor, however, shifts perspectives by asking why people buy. At any rate, Sami, Asmaa and Pierre appear to be buying what Victor is saying.

Meade Sutterfield, Susan and MELA administrator Walid Awny get a kick out of Victor.

Bill and Muzaffar prepare a revised schedule for the rest of the day.

By popular demand, facilitator Brice Bay, drawing on his experience as CEO of EnVeritas Group, leads an extracurricular session on entrepreneurship.

Change is hard because people overestimate the value of what they have, and underestimate the value of what they stand to gain. Surmounting that psychological barrier is a key element in strategy formulation, as Jim Crupi explains.

Feras is a no-barriers, sky's-the-limit kind of guy.

Once again, we were honored to have three top business leaders leading the evening's small group discussions -- mini master classes -- making their persons and expertise available to the MELA participants.

Yousef Tuqan Tuqan, (CEO, Flip Media, UAE) engages his group on the subject "Building Your Brand."

Yazan Majaj (Managing Director, Q Perspective Consultancy, Jordan) guides a discussion about "Engaging and Developing Employee Management."

Mazin Al Khatib (Managing Director, Fundraising and Investor Relations, Warburg Pincus UK) speaks on "Building a Personal Network."

Our sixth day is already over! In nautical terms, we have crossed the equator: we have passed the mid-point of our workshop!
