Smarter Hearts

MELA 3 DAY THREE, 17 MARCH 2012

The Rotana Hotel is wrapped in a thick morning fog.

This is the fog of confusion and misunderstanding.

Our presenters today will disperse this fog with their lucid and striking ideas.

Michael Kouly blows away the fog -- and our minds -- by exploring the mechanics and motivations behind our decision-making processes. At the same time, he brings us face-to-face with our deepest feelings about personal identity and purpose.

Time to decompress with a relaxing beverage. And a friendly wave!

But minds keeps whirring and the intense discussions continue: Halah and Susan Sutterfield.

Rima' and Andrew.

Lama and Angela Crossman. Angela has been a mainstay of the MELA administration team who sadly returns to her "real job" in London tonight. The program will be poorer without you, Angela!

Thamer, Abdullah and Obay. These guys are sharp in their minds and light on the feet.

When Michael challenged Adel to describe his purpose...

... the conversation moved in an unexpected direction!

Ideas and insights are flying thick and fast in the meeting room. MELA braintrust Rada, Hind and Dina put their heads together.

Emotional Intelligence -- having a "Smart Heart" -- involves a set of competencies crucial to leadership success, including communication skills, adaptability, and interpersonal effectiveness. Souhail Jouaneh guides participants to greater awareness of their EI strengths.

DISC is a powerful and nuanced model for understanding different forms of normal human behavior. Some of us are dominant and result-oriented. Others are steady team-players.

Some of us are Saudi. Others are Swiss. However, as Thamer and Ernst demonstrate, it is the differences that bind us.

Tea-time!

Falah has a proposition for Ali Fadhlani.

Khadeeja, Asmaa and Reem exemplify the practical possibilities of unity and harmony among the Gulf, Egypt and the Levant.

Ali Mortagui plays the air piano for Joe.

Back in the Pearl Ballroom, the participants' personalized DISC assessments are shared and analyzed.

Shadi enjoying the company of his peers, Saif and Ahmed.

It has been another long MELA day. But as evening approaches, the obscuring fog is a distant memory. The sky is as luminous as our fresh-seeing minds. The air is as warm as our MELA friendships and smarter hearts.
